How to Overcome Boredom when Doing Homework: 5 Great Ideas

Homework has the tendency to bore you to death. That is just the way it is. No matter how much the proponents of homework try to convince you that it keeps you in touch with academics, or that it motivates the student, the fact remains that most students do not like it. Why would anyone like doing schoolwork at home and calling it “homework”? Studies do not show a lot of correlation between homework and success; academic or otherwise. Homework certainly does not make students love their studies, or knowledge in general. On the contrary, it seems to be the culprit in most cases of aversion from studies.

Having said that, there is no way around doing your homework short of hiring someone who would do it for you. For the time being all that can be done is to make it less of an ordeal by fighting boredom. Here are a few things you can do to avoid getting bored while you do your homework:

  1. Music: Music can help with math homework. Your brain can keep working on the mathematical problems since there are not many words you have to deal with. This is not a good idea with other subjects.
  2. Change of scene: How about you bring your homework to a park? Often a change in environment can provide the necessary stimulus to make homework more pleasant. Other places to consider are: your terrace, a relatively empty café, a friends place etc.
  3. Dividing your homework into parts: You can do a pleasurable activity every twenty minutes or so if you divide your homework in manageable parts. This also gives you the added benefit of reducing stress. Making smaller tasks of the goal is a widely practiced technique in management.
  4. Company: One of the best ways to kick away boredom is to do your homework with friends. You can crib all you want while working on an assignment. It will be more fun snacking in the middle of homework. Another plus is the motivation you feel when working in teams.
  5. Colors: Using colors and colorful stationary can be a lot of fun, even when the homework is not. Use colored markers and highlighters, colored paper and post-it notes, and colorful stationary and paraphernalia to give a boost to your duller than dull assignments.

Whatever devices you use to make your homework interesting, do not resort to procrastination. Leaving your homework for another hour or day will actually increase the amount of stress, anxiety, and boredom associated with homework.
