I have heard from some why watch that sci-fi, it is foolishness. People flying around in space, the people look funny and people can’t beam down to planets. Turn that garbage off!

I think Sci-Fi is important to our culture because it fosters imagination. Imagination is what separates us from the animals. Imagination is what fuels invention and the reason we drive cars and live in climate controlled homes. Imagination created the unrealistic gee wiz technology seen in sci-fi shows and that gives people ideas to enrich our lives. Landing on the Moon has been the focus of many books and movies and look at what we have done. We landed on the Moon and frankly we need to go back to the Moon. Those nonsense foolish shows are what inspired us.

Ask any scientist what inspired them to go into science and most will tell you sci-fi. For me personally I would not be interested in astronomy without sci-fi especially Star Trek. Most look into the sky and see just unfamiliar stars. I look up and know exactly what I am looking at. Over there is Orion, there is Mars and over there is Saturn wouldn’t it be great to go there? I have seen distant galaxies that are millions of light years away. I have looked at beautiful nebula and wonder what it would be like to go there. I have looked at stars and wondered if there are planets there and if so what do they look like?

Sci-fi is not foolish we need more of it, we need more imagination and creative minds and someday we will be saying beam me up Scotty.
